Then, along came a man by the name of John Moses Browning. To chamber a round, pull the lever completely open finger off the trigger of course and close it again. There is a bit of credence to this differentiation, though not perhaps not as much as some of the salespeople behind the counter would have you believe. The combination made it the best-selling sporting rifle of its day. This left Winchester in a quandary. Its best-selling rifle was about to become unaffordable.
Date of manufacture of a Winchester model 70
By Chuck Hawks Win. Illustration courtesy of U. That was the year that their revised for cheaper manufacture line of firearms was introduced. Unfortunately, the revisions included the Model 94 lever action rifle.
The Winchester Model is a lever-action repeating firearm developed and manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in the late 19th century, chambered for a number of full-size military and hunting cartridges such as ×54mmR, British,, Army,, Winchester, Winchester, Winchester and Winchester.
There is the 24″ Rifle with octagon barrel; the round barreled 19″ Carbine; the Sporting Rifle with pistol grip stock and choice of a 24″ or 30″ barrel, all available in. Navy Arms says of this model that the original Short Rifle was very rare and available on special order only. It was very popular in the Southwest along the Mexican Border in the s and s, and it is easy to see why as this is a very handy and easy to use lever gun.
The Border Model has a brilliantly case colored receiver mated up with a red colored wood for forearm and butt stock, and blued barrel and crescent shaped butt plate. As with the original there is a sliding dust cover over the top of the exposed action and a small locking lever to hold the operating lever in place.
The has a unique action that is unlike any later models. As with the and , the cartridge is fed back onto a lifter from the magazine tube and this sliding brass lifter then comes straight up and the cartridge is fed into the chamber by the bolt. It makes a most distinctive sound in operation that endears itself to its users much like the clicks of a Colt Single Action as the hammer is drawn back. With its short but heavy octagon barrel, the balances very well and comes right up on target.
As with the Henry and the Yellow Boy, the Model does not have a strong action and should not be subjected to loads that are anywhere near the heavy class. The standard Rifle Model has a 24″ octagonal barrel and the choice of either a blued or case colored receiver with real American walnut found in both the forearm and butt stock. Joining the rifle is the 20″ round barreled carbine, the most popular of all the original Model s as seen by millions of us in four decades of John Wayne movies.

This is a Winchester model 74, a semi-automatic with a 24″ barrel, chambered for. It was made in the mid ‘s and wasn’t one of Winchesters best designs. The firing pin is this 3 piece unit that’s easily damaged and replacements are impossible to find. The tube magazine loads thru a hole in the stock. The set-up is a little clumsy and like as not, you’ll end up getting at least one round facing the wrong way every other time you reload. This particular gun is prone to stovepipe type jams. I haven’t figured out why yet.
When I do I’ll edit it into this post. From the condition of the finish on the metal, it looks like it had a hard life, but the stock is is very good condition, so my guess is the bluing wasn’t that great to begin with.

Oh, sure, Ithaca, Stevens and Remington guns had their fans, but it was Winchester’s Model 12 that dominated both the market and the public consciousness for decades. However, by the beginning of the ‘s, the times were a changin’, to paraphrase Bob Dylan.
In the case of the firearms industry, the biggest change was necessitated by skyrocketing labor costs that rendered many of the best production firearms unprofitable, a regrettable process that continues to this day. Guns designed for less labor intensive manufacture, using stamped sheet metal parts, cast aluminum frames and impressed checkering were the coming thing in the late ‘s and early ‘s, necessary to hold retail prices in check. Winchester succumbed to the pressure of rising costs in by introducing complete revisions of their most popular centerfire rifles the Model 70 and Model 94 and introducing entirely new rimfire rifles, pump and autoloading shotguns designed specifically to reduce production costs and increase profit margin.
Perhaps the most dramatic change in was the new Model pump shotgun, which replaced the classic Model The Model shared almost nothing with its Model 12 predecessor, except the first two digits of its model number and a streamlined action.

Design[ edit ] The Model was the first Winchester rifle to feature a box magazine located underneath the action instead of the tubular magazine design, which had remained fundamentally unchanged from the Winchester This allowed the rifle to safely chamber military and hunting cartridges with spitzer pointed bullets. The M was also the last of the lever-action rifles to be designed by John Browning , and featured a rear locking bolt as in his previous designs dating back to the Winchester The M is the strongest lever-action rifle Winchester has produced, designed to handle the increased pressures generated by the more powerful smokeless powder cartridges entering common use at the time of its introduction.

Winchester Model 37 Pigtail Red Letter. This is a little long but it all has to be said to get the story told. When I was a teen my best friend had a Winchester Model That was over 40 years ago and I’ve wanted one ever since. A couple of years ago I started researching this little gun on the web and found out that the early guns, to had red enamel in the lettering stamped into the bottom of the receiver and on the butt plate.
These are the more desirable 37s and are known as the Red Letter guns. So I started occasionally looking at the online gun auctions and was shocked at what some were bringing

There were at least 3 changes inside the receiver that we are aware of. First year of production saw 2 machined lips for the front top of the magazine to rest on when it was locked into place. The rear set was approximately at the location of the shoulder detent of the magazine. Later receivers had this rear lip machined out. Also we have found on later guns at a serial number of near where the was introduced that the front lips was moved forward slightly.
